Tengry Sadhu board with copper nails, white with gold engraving, to be cleaned and stored in its case

How to Care for Your Sadhu Board: Cleaning, Storage and Copper Patina

A Sadhu board is one of the simplest wellness tools you can own: no batteries, no settings, nothing to replace. Still, you stand on it barefoot almost every day, so a few simple habits keep it hygienic and help it last for years.

After every session

  • Wipe the nails. Use a dry cloth or a cloth with a little rubbing alcohol. Wipe along the rows of nails rather than across them, so the cloth does not catch.
  • Let it air-dry. Leave the board flat for a few minutes before you put it away, especially after barefoot practice.
  • Put it back in its case. Every Tengry board comes with a soft case. It keeps dust off the nails and protects the floor and furniture when you carry it.

Once a week

  • Wipe the nails and the surface of the board with a slightly damp cloth, then dry it straight away.
  • Look along the rows: every nail should stand at the same height. If you ever notice a loose nail, stop using the board and contact us.

What to avoid

  • Soaking or washing under the tap. The base is birch plywood finished with three layers of varnish. The varnish protects it from occasional moisture, but the board is not waterproof.
  • Damp rooms. Do not store the board in a bathroom or next to a humidifier.
  • Direct sun and radiators. Strong heat and sunlight can fade the paint and dry out the wood over time.
  • Harsh cleaners. Bleach, abrasive sponges and strong solvents can damage the varnish and the engraving.

Copper nails: patina is normal

Copper reacts with air and moisture, so copper nails slowly darken and can develop a warm patina. This is natural and does not affect the practice. Many people like the look of a board that has been used for years.

If you prefer the original shine, polish the nails gently with a soft dry cloth. Keep the board dry and patina will develop more slowly.

Aluminum nails

Aluminum does not rust and keeps its silver color. A wipe with a dry cloth after use is usually all it needs.

Practising with socks

Many beginners start in socks. That keeps the nails cleaner, but wash practice socks often and let the board dry if your feet were warm.

Sharing a board

If several people in your home use the same board, wipe the nails with a little alcohol between users. For studios and group practice, give each person their own board where possible.

How long does a Sadhu board last?

With basic care, a board lasts for years of daily practice. The nails do not wear down from standing; what ages first is the paint and varnish, and that is mostly a matter of how the board is stored.
